Image
Photograph taken in 1979 at Tanjong Lobang College for the Tang Soo Do club. Managed to meet few few of the old boys but not the ladies. Taken in Kinarut during the outward bound training in 1983. Damn tough training days and night for 2 solid weeks with the Gurkha ways of training. Its real tough guy training in the jungle and water. NO class room. Its all in the jungle of Sabah mountainous region. Its all DIY.

Famous Lapok Highway.

Image
Scene during bad times - rainy days Thats why Buffaloes are alternatives here. These are the road users. Lorries ... During good times- dry seasons. The infamous Lapok Road, Tinjar. First of all, i am not a good writer and historian. Forgive me for that. Built by the government in the 1980’s during the late Datuk Luhat Wan was the member Of Parliament. His vision was to have good road to Long Lama. Good road means road surface totally tar sealed. He wanted to bring the good standard of road in West Malaysia to Baram which was under his constituency in the National Coalition Government – Barisan Nasional. When he was defeated by my close opposition friend Mr Harrison in early 1990’s who was named a giant killer. The former candidate lost because he was so arrogant. He always critised the NGO’s activity particularly SAM ( Sahabat Alam Malaysia) which was championed in this area by Harrison. While the land issues was hot, that’s the boiling pot for him. People just don’t like him anymore.

Kayan Aristocrats

Image
Kayan Tribe Aristocrat. Background Kayans live in highly stratified societies. Aristocrats (hipun urna or maren or keta'u) are politically dominant and allied with each other through closed marriage over an area . In the past their wealth are in form of gongs, beads, and jars. They control everything from the land, rules, right to demand and judge the others. Within the village, each longhouse has a headman, who is an aristocrat. In villages having more than one longhouse, each of the longhouse headmen is also an aristocrat as headman. During the era of the headhunting of Borneo, Kayan people were regarded as one of the most fierce rural people. They were the enemy of the other Borneo tribes like the Ibans, Kelabit, Berawan, Lakiput and so on. In those days killings were regarded as the most valuable jobs to gain reputation and adored by the ladies. Before getting married, the guy must proof himself that he is worthy by having at least one head in his record. When the men came back

Apau Kayan-Kalimantan

Extract from indahnesia.com: Introduction to Apokayan Apokayan (Apoh Kayan, or 'high plains of the Kayan') is the name for the area around the upper stream of the Kayan. The region is cut off from the downstream part of the river because of the many unpassible rapids. Because of it's isolated position, just like the upper Mahakam, it took a long time before the first western influences arrived. The fundamentalistic mission, which has been active for over 70 years now, has pushed away most part of the traditional Dayak culture. Because of the inevitable transport problems, there is no commercial woodchop in the Apokayan region, so the ecology is still in tact. Who wants to watch birds can best visit one of the many side rivers of the Kayan. But there are also plenty of wild pigs and deer, among them the muntjak (the barking deer). Mass Exodus The population of Apokayan has decreased dramatically in the late 20th century. A shortage of (reachable) agricultural soil and high c
